Background of the study
In the dynamic landscape of digital communication, Twitter serves as a fertile ground for linguistic creativity. Nigerian users, in particular, have harnessed the platform’s brevity to experiment with morphological innovations through unique captioning styles. These captions often incorporate novel affixation, compounding, and blending techniques that diverge from standard language norms (Ibrahim, 2023). The rapid exchange of tweets and the cultural vibrancy of Nigerian discourse encourage the emergence of new word forms that reflect socio-political trends, humor, and local identity. This study examines how Twitter captions contribute to morphological innovation by analyzing user-generated content. It explores the interplay between digital affordances and creative linguistic practices while highlighting the transformative impact of social media on traditional language structures (Okafor, 2024). By documenting these innovations, the research aims to expand our understanding of digital morphology and inform broader discussions on language evolution in online communities (Adebayo, 2023).
Statement of the problem
Although Nigerian Twitter users actively engage in morphological innovation through creative captioning, empirical research on this phenomenon remains scarce. Existing studies have largely focused on general digital communication without specifically addressing the novel word formations in Twitter captions (Chukwu, 2023). This research gap limits our understanding of how such morphological innovations emerge and spread within online communities. Consequently, the impact of these innovations on conventional language norms is underexplored, hindering the development of theoretical models that integrate digital language practices with traditional linguistic frameworks (Ibrahim, 2024).
Objectives of the study
Research questions
Significance of the study
This study is significant as it offers an in-depth analysis of morphological innovation in Nigerian digital discourse, specifically through Twitter captions. The findings will advance our understanding of how digital platforms foster linguistic creativity, inform language educators and policymakers, and contribute to theoretical models of language change in the digital era (Ibrahim, 2023).
Scope and limitations of the study
The study is limited to the examination of morphological innovation in Twitter captions among Nigerian users. It does not extend to other social media platforms or offline linguistic practices.
